I’ve been feeling really stressed out lately. I just started a new job, I’m studying for the SAT, I have swim practice five days a week, and last week, I had five tests in five different subjects. On top of all that, my boyfriend and I just broke up and my best friend announced that she and her family are moving out of the country at the end of the summer. I feel like everything is happening at once and I can’t do anything to stop it. How can I let go of stress and stay positive when everything seems to be spiraling out of control?
Sometimes, life can get messy. When that happens, it’s important to let yourself feel however you’re feeling. Take some time to grieve for the loss of your boyfriend and your friend, and don’t expect yourself to be feeling absolutely 100% immediately. Try not to be to hard on yourself, or expect things of yourself that you wouldn’t expect of others in your situation. Instead, grab a tub of ice cream, watch Roman Holiday, and let yourself have a good cry. Talk to friends and family members about what’s going on in your life so that they can support you.
When everything hits you at once–school, college, work, life–it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Try to focus on what’s going on in your life that you can control, and let go of what you can’t. Take a step back every once in awhile and evaluate how things are going. If you’ve been feeling really stressed for several weeks in a row, you might want to consider cutting back your hours at work or waiting on the SAT. I know that sometimes changes like this can seem earth-shattering, but trust Nano, the universe will continue to exist even if you work for four hours a week instead of twelve. Do what you have to do to live a healthy lifestyle, and don’t compare yourself to what others seem to be handling, because every person has a different situation.
Finally, remember to take some time with yourself. Try to spend ten minutes every day doing something quiet that relaxes you, be it coloring, meditating, going for a walk, etc. This can be a great way to center yourself and help you feel less frazzled. Again, don’t forget to put your health first. And know that you have an entire community at Pres rooting for you and supporting you.
I’ve been trying to eat healthier this year, but it’s really hard for me to find the time between school, soccer, and homework. I always find myself gravitating towards whatever is quickest, which normally turns into potato chips and chocolate chip cookies. Do you have any quick, healthy snack ideas that you could suggest to someone like me with limited time?
I definitely empathize with you. While I was running my schools and visiting the elderly, I often found it hard to find the time to make food. Here are some of my favorite snacks:
Nano’s Grab-And-Go Snack Packs
Apples and Almond Butter. Just slice up an apple, and spread almond butter on top. This is a scrumptious high protein snack, perfect for an energy boost right before soccer practice.
Unbuttered and unsalted popcorn with ¼ teaspoon grapeseed oil. You have to pop the popcorn separately, then top it with grapeseed oil. This is a great healthy alternative to typical microwave popcorn.
KIND Bars. These nut based bars are pretty much the best pre-packaged food option that exists. You can buy them at any store.
Bean and Cheese Quesadilla with guacamole and salsa. Put cheese on a tortilla in a pan on a stove, then top with black beans and more cheese. Wait for it to start to melt a bit before covering it with another tortilla and flipping it over. When it’s done, serve with guacamole and salsa.
When all else fails, fruit!!! There’s nothing like a bowl of raspberries or some orange slices after a hard day at work. You can even prewash or pre-cut some fruit on the weekends, so that they’re ready to go throughout the week.
